In Vitro Fertilization, or IVF process in short, is a type of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) through which couples who have problems in natural conception are assisted to get pregnant. The fertile egg and sperm are collected and stored in an incubator and when it forms into an embryo, it is transferred back into the uterus. It is thus a treatment that has been solving many infertility issues.
Step By Step Process Of IVF
The IVF treatment is administered in the following way:
- First, you need to visit a doctor who specializes in IVF. There you will be made aware of all the minute details of IVF and the treatment. Both partners will also get counseling from the doctor.
- Next, you are to undergo various tests and the IVF specialists would perform a detailed review of your medical history.
- When they find you fit for the treatment, the actual treatment will begin on or around 21 days of your menstrual cycle. You would be administered medications to suppress your existing hormonal levels.
- In the next stage, injections will be prescribed to stimulate your ovaries and to produce several follicles. The development of follicles will be monitored until they mature; which usually takes 10 to 12 days.
- Thereafter, nearly 36 hours later, the eggs are collected using a hollow needle from the ovary. This is done by using ultrasound guidance and while you are sedated.
- Next, the eggs are fertilized along with your partner’s or donor’s sperm and cultured in lab for 16 to 20 hours. They are then and kept in a incubator for 6 days; where its development is monitored.
- Now when the embryo is fertilized, it is transferred back to the ovary for normal growth.
- Finally you need to wait for the pregnancy which, if positive, means that the treatment is a success. Else you need to again undergo another cycle for the same.
“Around 66% of patients starting IVF treatment finally succeed in having a child 40% during the IVF treatment at the centre and 26% after IVF discontinuation.
